If you’re planning on quitting smoking you’re understandably concerned about what happens when you stop. What are the quitting smoking side effects and can I avoid them? I’ll address some of these concerns right now.

Many of the side effects result from nicotine withdrawal. Smokers quickly become addicted to nicotine. Nicotine affects many parts of the body and makes most people feel somewhat relaxed.

The addictive properties of nicotine work like those of heroin or any other narcotic. Once you are addicted to nicotine, you need a regular dose. And, once the nicotine is withdrawn, as it happens when you quit smoking, the person will suffer from side effects.

A very common side effect is a change in mood. People who quit smoking are often “on edge” and irritable for the first several days. Others become depressed or anxious. Yet another response is to feel agitated and have trouble paying attention to detail.

Another side effect that occurs when you stop smoking is restless sleep or facing problems going off to sleep. This is a natural reaction of your body, which tends to get restless once the source of addiction is removed.

Although these side effects sound pretty bad, remember that they only last for a few days. Of course it would be best not to experience any side effects and fortunately it is possible to minimize them.

Many of the side effects are mainly caused by the withdrawal of nicotine. Therefore, if you use nicotine substitute, you will be able to reduce some or all of the side effects to a large extent.

Nicotine does your body no good but it is better to take a replacement than inhaling nicotine along with many other toxins that are present in cigarettes. Once you have managed to overcome the psychological difficulty in giving up your addiction to cigarettes using a nicotine substitute, you can easily give up the nicotine without experiencing any side effects.

It doesn’t hurt to remind you that the negative symptoms that you face when you quit smoking will be present just for a few days; and it is worth the discomfort if you want to regain your health and live a healthy life. Once you quit smoking, you will start experiencing the positive effects. The more number of days you go smoke-free, the stronger the effects will become.
