The inability of a woman get pregnant and become a mother is referred to as female infertility. Female infertility can occur due to any of the following cause:
? Age as a general factor: The downward spiral of female fertility begins from 27. At 35 she approaches toward infertility. And rate of success of becoming pregnant goes down from 3% to 5% post 30. At 50 menopause occurs and this puts a full stop to the dreams and aspirations of becoming a mother.
Genetic causes – Androgen insensitivity syndrome and such other related genetic problems can cause female infertility,
Causes related to the Hypothalamic-pituitary gland – In cases where there is some problem hampering the proper functioning of the thyroid glad, the female menstruation cycle may not occur on time. This is termed as Hypothalamic amenorrhea. The entire process of conceiving a baby is controlled by the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system in a lady’s body. Any problem in the system results in female infertility,
Ovarian factors that include Polycystic ovarian syndrome which results in an abnormally low production of follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH as a result of which, the follicles fail to produce a matured egg. This may make the female infertile. This problem also includes diminished ovarian reserve and Anovulation. The fact is that women are born with a finite number of eggs or oocytes and as the reproductive years go by, the number and the quality of oocytes start to weaken.
Diminished Ovarian Reserve is another ovarian factor in which the woman is affected as she advances in her age. Premature Menopause happens when the follicles start depleting even before the woman reaches menopausal age making her infertile. Menopause starts when her reproductive structure comes to the end and Luteal dysfunction or Luteal Phase Defect is responsible for Implantation Failure which can again leave a woman infertile. Ovarian Cancer obviously makes a woman infertile. Some other ovarian factors include Gonadal dysgenesis in the form of Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in which both the lutienizing hormone (LH)) as well as the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH is produced poorly and as a result, functional ovaries fail to develop.
Peritoneal causes, related to ectopic (tubal) problems – Primary among these factors is Endometriosis. In such cases, the endometrial cells, that are present in the female womb, start to get accumulated outside the cavity of the uterus. This cavity already has a lining of endometrial cells, and the latter are influenced by the hormones of the woman. Now, these hormones also start to affect the endometrial cells located outside the cavity. With time, grave problems can arise from this, leading up to female infertility. Conversely, an infertile woman is often found to be suffering from endometriosis. Other Tubal peritoneal reasons, like Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases, can cause infertility. In these cases, alternative forms of bacteria can cause different infections in the female appendix, her reproductive parts as well as in her intestinal organs (that are located in the lady’s pelvis). If these infections affect the fallopian tubes of a woman, the female egg cannot move through them in the direction of the uterus. As a result, problems of female infertility crop up. Termed as Salpingitis in the medical circles, this is indeed a common cause of infertility in women. Other problems in the pelvic area, like Pelvic Tuberculosis, can also occur, with similar adverse effects on the reproductive system of women,
Uterine factor includes Uterine Fibroids that may develop just under the lining of the uterine cavity (submucosal uterine fibroid) and may cause heavy menstrual bleeding. They are also responsible for infertility and miscarriage in women.
Causes related to the cervix – Problems in the female cervix can range from Non-receptive cervical mucus to Cervical Stenosis. Infertility due to cervical problems results in the male sperm not being able to move along the uterine entrance points, due to certain obstructions. These obstructing factors can be caused by: i) Cervical mucus that is either not enough, or, is inhospitable, ii) Narrowing of the cervix (Stenosis), iii) Ureaplasma urealyticum, gonorrhea, Chlamydia, trichomonas, mycoplasma hominis, and other such common STD-related infections that afflict the female cervix, and iv) allergic tendencies from male sperm.
The above discussion shows that a number of causes can result in female infertility. Hence, it is crucial to put a tab on the actual problem-creating factor(s). In these cases, it is advisable to opt for holistic methods of treatment. These approaches, unlike the conventional treatment methods, try to find the actual reasons of the problem. The traditional methods however, involved only the application of IVF, ICSI, and other assisted reproductive techniques. On the other hand, Chinese medicines, herbs, acupuncture methods, proper exercises, a balanced diet regime are commonly recommended by holistic techniques. These techniques also advise ladies to have a healthy general way of life. Indeed, it has been seen that the holistic methods have a higher success rate in dealing with female infertility problems than the conventional methods.
