Rock concerts were the rage in the 80’s and they pushed numerous kids to buy their first electric guitars. Today, video games like Rockband are having the same effect.

The heart of all heavy rock music does not just lie with the words; it also lies with the electric guitar and the various sounds that it can produce. There are so many kids across the block who would give anything to play like Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Angus Young etc. These men are not just some of the best guitarists of their times, they are legends.

If you are interested in discovering how to play the guitar then the first thing you will need to do is select one. Normally people start with an acoustic guitar and graduate to the electric guitar. It can be quite tedious for anyone to choose the right guitar initially, since there are 100’s of makes out there on the market. If you’re purchasing an electric guitar then you will also need to get an amp, pick-ups, picks, a tuner etc.

Electric guitars are available in a huge variety of shapes and designs with the aerodynamic designs being some of the most popular. Don’t purchase the first guitar you see. You need to spend time looking around and check out the wide range of prices and vast array of models before you buy one. In fact, one of the better ways to choose a guitar is by the brand or by the style. Here is my take on the four basic styles:

Stratocaster (Also known as the ‘Strat’) – This certainly is a show stealer and has a typical style. The most famous is the red and white color combination, which was shredded regularly by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. The Stratocaster is from Fender and has a neck that is fastened to the guitar’s body. Aside from this, it has twin cutaway sides, 22 frets accompanied by a tremolo bar and 3 single-coil pickups. Fender designed the first Strato in the early 50’s. Some of the popular designs include:

Telecaster – The Telecaster is another great instrument from Fenders. It is more than just another axe; it is more like a complete band. It is a solid body guitar and comprises of 2 pick-ups. The first Telecaster was produced by Leo Fender in the 1940’s and has a single cutaway body. It doesn’t have the tremolo bar but has two different single-coil pickups. Some of the popular Telecaster models include:

Les Paul – This classic electric guitar was designed by Gibson for some of the jazz stars of the day. The prominent feature of a Les Paul electric is its set neck construction, which means there are no bolts. The body is a single cutaway. It is fitted out with 2 pickups as well as a raised scratch-plate. If you want to play perverted sound then this great guitar will provide you with a huge range. Some of the well known shredders who use the Les Pauls include Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carlos Santana. Some of the renowned Les Paul models include:

* Les Paul Custom Electric: $3050-$3550 * 1959 Les Paul Standard: $5550-$6000 * Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Electric Guitar: $700-$850 * Les Paul Classic Electric Guitar: $1800-$1900

The Gibson Brand – Gibson is one of the powerhouse brands in all of guitar and all their guitar models are absolute classics and shoud not be compared to others. Gibson guitar company was actually founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson and has been accountable for providing the world some of the best acoustic and electric guitars. A couple of the famous models include the ES-150 and the Flying V etc. Some of the legends who have played a Gibson include Ace Frehley and Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath) to name just a couple. Some of the most popular Gibson models include:

* Flying V Guitar: $500-$600 * Gibson SG 61 Classic: $1500-$1600 * Gibson Faded SG Special: $550-$600 * Gibson Explorer Pro Guitar: $1100-$1200

These are some of the most well known brands of guitars. The other aspects that will help you to pick up a guitar include the shape of the fretboard, the pick-ups, and the body. Full-bodied guitars are normally favored as they can generate some of the best sounds that you will ever get to hear.
